FREE AND CHEAP THINGS TO DO THIS SUMMER

Most summers, we load our summer scheduled down with all kinds of different activities - camping trips, visits to state parks, community festivals, and lots of other things.
But how do you find all of these things. Here are ten resources we use for finding great free/cheap things to do during the summer.

Community Festivals
http://www.festivals.com/Looking for city-wide festivals in your local community or in neighboring communities? Festivals.com is the best resource I’ve yet found for collecting listings of all of these festivals. While it doesn’t include everything, it does point out lots of interesting activities near your zip code all throughout the summer.

Music Festivalshttp://www.festivalfinder.com/Once you get beyond mega-festivals like Bonnaroo, there are a lot of music festivals all across the country, and many are surprisingly inexpensive (sometimes free). Such festivals are a great way to hear lots of interesting music and meet people who have similar interests.

National Parks
http://www.nps.gov/findapark/A national parks pass can be one of the best frugal investments around. National parks are wonderful places to explore, camp, hike, and enjoy. The stunning beauty and majesty of nature found within many of the parks is well worth visiting.

State Parks
http://www.stateparks.com/usa.htmlIf you want a even less expensive and more local alternative to national parks, try finding a great state park near your area. State parks offer very inexpensive camping options and plenty of interesting area to explore and enjoy.

Libraries
http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/libraries/librarysearch/Many libraries offer great summer programs of all kinds: reading groups, reading programs for kids, free film nights, and so on. Summertime is a great time to get in touch with the many interesting and free programs available right in your own town at the library.

Community Calendars
http://www.google.com/search?q=community+calendarJust add your city and state to the above Google query to find the community calendar for your own town. Community calendars are loaded with interesting and enjoyable free events, from community dinners to farmer’s markets in your local area. It’s also worth searching for the community calendars of cities and towns adjacent to where you life.

Craft Fairs
http://www.craftsfaironline.com/region.htmlIf you enjoy crafting, craft fairs can be incredibly fun ways to spend a day or two. Most craft fairs are free to enter and often provide a way to sell or trade your craft products, as well as pick up interesting and useful supplies and also learn new techniques.

Natural Collections
http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2008/06/25/starting-a-natural-collection/Summertime is the perfect time to start a natural collection of your own. It gives you a great reason to start exploring the outdoors anywhere and everywhere, doesn’t cost a thing, and can provide the foundation of a lifelong passion. Start a notebook tracking the birds you find. Collect leaves or interesting rocks. Just explore the natural beauty around you.

Minor League Baseball
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.comMost communities of any size have a minor league baseball team in the area - or has one at least somewhere nearby. Minor league baseball games are pure fun - much more frugal and much more laid back than major league games, often with wacky entertainment to boot. Minor league versions of any other sport are similar in their frugal fun, particularly minor league hockey, though it is rarely played in the summer.

Volunteering
http://www.volunteermatch.org/Want a great free activity that you can spend lots of hours on, enjoy the outdoors, and feel good about yourself afterward? Few things can beat volunteering, and you can usually get the whole family involved.

HOMEMADE CLEANER AND STAIN REMOVER

One way I’ve found to really save money is by making your own cleaning solutions!

I'd buy cleaning items only when they are FREE or loss than .50ea so If you don't find a sale soon with these simple homemade tricks you will be doing the chores without sacrifice $$$

These solutions literally cost about 40 cents or so to make, as opposed to the $3 - $4 price tag you’ll often see on cleaners.Following are some tried and true “recipes” for homemade cleaning solutions. Just a few simple ingredients, and you’re on your way to some effective and thrifty cleaners!

Homemade 409
2 Tbsp. Distilled White Vinegar1 Tsp. Borax1/8 cup Dawn Dishsoap1 cup Hot WaterPour vinegar, borax and hot water into spray bottle. Then continue filling spray bottle with cool water.Add dawn dishsoap last. No need to shake. This is a great cleaner, because the vinegar acts as a disinfectant!

Homemade Laundry Stain Remover

I have a baby and a toddler=a lot of stains in t-shirts , and this stain remover has never let me down!1/3 cup Dawn Dishsoap1/3 cup Ammonia3 Tbsp. Baking Soda1 cup Water Mix all ingredients together and store in an empty spray bottle (I use an old “Shout” spray bottle)If you haven’t tried making your own cleaning solutions, I’d highly encourage you to try! You might be amazed at how much $$ you’ll save!

Homemade Fabric Softener

If you’re not sure how to use the inexpensive Suave, try this recipe for homemade fabric softener

6 cups hot water
3 cups white vinegar
2 cups Suave Conditioner (I use refreshing watrefall mist-or any smelling fresh conditioner)

Combine the hot water and conditioner and shake or stir until the conditioner is dissolved. Add the vinegar, mix well and your ready to go.

Homemade "Soft Scrub"

1 2/3 cu. baking soda

1/2 cu. liquid hand soap (NOT dish soap - too bubbly)

1/2 cu. water

2 Tbsp white vinegar

Mix baking soda and soap in a bowl (using a fork works well). Add water and mix until smooth. Add baking soda and mix. Pour into your container.
I use an old 24oz ketchup bottle with a squirt-top for this cleaner - works well. You do have to shake it pretty vigorously before you use it because all the baking soda settles to the bottom!

COUPONS FROM EBAY-WHY?

Lets face it your local store have a great deal in one product you use a lot and rarely see specials on it or just because you really like the product. In this case I gonna give you an everyday example:chesse.I use this product at least twice a week and we use a lot when making pizza. My jewel store get a deal a while ago for $1.50 ea great deal to buy 4 or 6 with the coupons I get on the sunday insert but that won't last for 2 or 3 weeks right?...
I decide to look on ebay...yes I found almost everything on that website that also is my part time job for sales..ok to the topic-I found 20coupons of 0.75off any *raft cheese for $1.50 FREE shipping. These coupons help me to buy 20 packages of cheese at 0.75ea=$15 OOP as a bonus the CATALINA machine give me back a coupon of 3.00OFF my next purchase at the store It's like a get all my cheese for only $12.00.

HOMEMADE PLAY DOUGH

When I’m at a loss for something fun to do with the kids, or I need them to stay occupied while I accomplish a project, homemade play dough works for me!
By making your own play dough, you can customize the colors to fit the current holiday.
It’s less expensive than the store bought stuff.
The texture is so soft and smooth that I sometimes forget my projects and play along.
It doesn’t get all crumbly like the store bought stuff.
My favorite thing about homemade play dough… if my 13 month old decides it looks good enough to eat… I don’t worry about her eating scary chemicals.

Play Dough #1
1 c. flour
1/3 c. salt
1 Tbsp. oil
1 Tbsp. cream of tartar
1 c. water
food coloring
Mix all together and place over low heat. Stir often until it is the consistency of mashed potatoes. Turn out onto waxed paper and cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Play Dough #2
2 c. flour
2 Tbsp. alum
1 1/2 c. water
1/2 c. salt
1 Tbsp. oil
food coloring
Heat to boiling the water, salt, oil and food coloring. Stir liquids into dry ingredients. Knead until smooth. Allow to cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

RECESSION-PROOF YOUR FAMILY

You have a good job that pays well for your everyday living, that's great but..have you think what would happen if you lost your job or if your partner loss his(hers)Would you make it trough until you find a better job with the same salary?

It’s not about how much you make. It’s about making that amount, however large or small, work for you. My husband is a teacher and coach in a small town. Without getting too specific, his salary qualifies our kindergarten daughter for reduced lunch prices at school. It’s not a lot of money, but it’s working for us. We chose to live on this income. We chose for me to be a stay at home mom. We are thriving. In the event that your income is reduced for whatever reason, maybe some of what works for us might just work for you, too.
1. Ditch the Joneses. They are not your friends. They will tempt you to spend money that you don’t have on things that you don’t need. Surround yourself with like-minded frugal friends. Make it a game… who can find an item for the least expensive price? Network and help each other save money.
2. Learn the power of contentment and gratitude. Truly, we have so much. Our vehicles are old, but they are paid for and run well. We don’t budget for big vacations, but there are many activities we can enjoy as a family for free. Don’t waste your time worrying about the latest and greatest that you don’t have; rather, focus on your many blessings.
3. Swallow your pride. If you shy away from second-hand stores, clearance racks, or garage sales, get over yourself! My daughters are constantly complimented on their fashions, and I’m always willing to report that we receive fantastic hand-me-downs. Without a doubt, I have spent less than $300 TOTAL on children’s clothing in the last 6 years.
4. Just because you have it doesn’t mean you have to spend it. In the days when we both had jobs and no children, we did our best to live on one income while saving the other. That made my transition home so much smoother. Even now we usually have extra at the end of the month. Sure, we could use a new (fill in the blank) but we could also save that money. We choose to save. We refuse to be caught with a new TV but no money to pay for an unexpected emergency.
5. Take up a "lost art". Don’t know how to cook? Learn! Can’t sew a button? Figure it out! So many things that we pay for can be done at home, saving countless amounts of money. Last year we planted our first garden. While much intimidated by my proven black thumb, we were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to produce crops of potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, and even pumpkins. I smile every time I pull tomatoes and peppers from the freezer to add to soups or casseroles this winter. Not paying store prices for mediocre veggies is definitely a Finer Thing! We plan to expand our garden this summer.
6. Use your talents for profit. Even if you have no desire to start a home business, you can make money from home. While I would never want to commit to running a daycare, we do have a couple of sweet preschoolers who stay with us a few days a week. They are very little extra work for me, and my son gets a kick out of having playmates at the house. The extra cash I make from babysitting really adds up! Another idea… if you’re cooking for your own family anyway, why not make a few extra meals for someone to pick up on their way home from work? It’s amazing what people will pay for convenience!

Living happily on one (smallish) income is possible. Focus on the Finer Things and thrive!

How to organize your stockpile

COUPON 101 more info about couponing*

Coupon 101-part 1

Reasons of couponing
To be honest I use to think coupons were a waste of time. I would clip just a few and throw the rest in the trash. But my eyes have been opened. Now I look at a coupon as money in my pocket. Hope this info helps, let me know what other question you have.
Where do you get your coupons?
Newspaper- I have found the best place to get a wide varitey of coupons all at once is the Sunday coupon inserts. I try to get at least 4 sets of inserts a week. Not all papers carry the same inserts, so you might ask which inserts your local paper has. Once a month, Procter & Gamble has a special coupon insert dedicated to their products but it is available only in select papers. Visit THIS page to find out which papers carry the P&G inserts. I am lucky both my local papers carry this insert. Most papers allow you to purchase just the Sunday paper, or Muliple papers, at a lower price.
Printable Internet coupons- There are alot of really good sites to print coupons from. You can print the same coupons from alot of differnt sites. Most of the sites will allow you to print the coupon twice. But if you have more than one computer at home, you can print it twice from each computer. I found it works best to print with Internet Explorer, Firefox, and MAC. If you do not have high speed internet it can be tricky to get them to print. I have a link on the side of my blog listing my favorite print sites. DO NOT try to photo copy your coupons the stores can tell, and it will make using printable coupons harder for us all and result on companies to lose money and raise their prices, also you should know most of intenet printable coupons now have ip storage on their coupons. Check your local stores to see if they except printed coupons. Most my local stores do.

Blinkies- These are the little black boxes with the red blinking light that spits out coupons. You can find these little units on the selves in some stores, like Albertsons and WalGreens to name a few. Go ahead and take a few and save them for your coupon stash. But only take a few, remember to play nice and leave some for the next coupon hunter.
Ask around- you would be surprised how many people just throw them away. If at your work they get Sunday paper probably they just toss them Monday mornings. Grab the inserts . Once your friends, family, co-works and neighbors know you like coupons they are normally happy to help save them for you.Sometimes you have coupons or points to use them thowards more merchandise on the store..why not use them for xtra newspapers?
Peelies- these are the coupons that come stuck to a product. They normally have a long shelf life, they tend to not expire for up to a year. They are great to save and combine with future sales.
Buying coupons- According to the law, no one can “sell” a coupon. But they CAN charge you for the time and effort put into clipping it. You’ll find lots of coupons for sale on Ebay other sites . You would be surprised how many crazy coupon lady’s are out there, they look for the good ones and buy them up quick.
The Manufacturer- Many companies like it when you contact them. You can call, email, or write to them and tell them how much you love the product. Some companies are happy to send you coupons for discounts, or for free products. But not all companies do, you just have to ask around.

Coupons 101- part 2

What coupons to save?
Now that I have talked about where to get your coupons
we are on our way to the next step.
What coupons do you save? I clip and save almost every coupon.

The only time I don’t save a coupon is if it’s something I would never use even if it was free. So I keep 99% of my coupons. On Sunday when the coupon inserts come out, I spent about an hour clipping them out of 5 different papers. I put them in stacks of similar products. Like all the shampoo goes in one pile, all the cracker coupons in another. By clipping them out of the paper you are able to get rid of a lot of the bulk. Who wants to keep 50 papers around their house. From here you need to organize them, I keep all my coupons in a coupon binder ( I plan to do a post on this next week)

Why do I clip and save every coupon? I save every coupon because I never know what is going to come on sale. Or when I might find an item on clearance, and if I have all my coupons in a binder, with me. Then I am able to take advantage of both the coupon and the sale. Before I started my binder I can’t tell you how many times I would buy something that I had a coupon for at home but I just forgot to bring it. Or I didn’t plan to buy it that week, but when I got to the store it was one sale. So I missed a great way to save even more money.
Don’t be to stuck on one brand- When you save all coupons, you are able to take advantage of some great sales. If you only save the coupons for the brands, you normally buy then you pay a lot more. For example: My family normally buys JIFF peanut butter, so if I see and coupon for JIFF I will hang on to it. But if I see a coupon for SKIPPY I might just toss it in the trash. Now if both peanut butters are $3.00 a jar I will always buy the one I like best. But if I find a sale later that month for SKIPPY for $1.75 and I have a .75 cents off coupon it would make the SKIPPY a $1 and the JIFF still is $3.00 and at that price I would be happy to buy SKIPPY. SO clip all brands and always bring your coupons along with you.

How many to save- I try to get at least 5 of each coupon but I am thrilled when I get more than that. Why do I save so many? Example: If Albertsons is having a sale on Chili, for 75 cents, and normal price is a $1, plus I have a coupon for .25 cents. That would make it half price .50 cents, a great deal….but I don’t really want to go out of my way for one can of chili. But if I have saved 8 coupons, and I can get 8 cans at half price it will then be worth my time to buy it. Plus I then have a nice “food storage” of chili. When you buy items at a low price, and stock up the goal is to have enough so you won’t have to buy it again till it comes on sale. This way you are ALWAYS able to buy your items half off or more.

Coupons 101- Part 3

When to use your coupons?
When to use your coupons- Just because you have a coupon does not mean you should buy an item. In fact if you buy items just because you have a coupon, you will end up spending more money on items you don’t really need, and are still over priced. The trick is to wait for the coupon to go on sale or clearance which is an even better deal.
Wait for a sale- Wait for items to come on sale then use the coupon along with the sale. Then buy several of that item, so you don’t need to buy it again till another sale comes along. Example- I have 10 tubes of name brand toothpaste. People I know tell me “But I don’t need 10 tubes of toothpaste!”. Well what I tell them is that if I can get paid over $10 to BUY 10 tubes of toothpaste then why not do it. And know that I wont need to spend that $30 dollars over the next year. Each time you can save like this adds up, and by year end you could save a ton of money. Or go on that vacation you wanted.

Buy one get one free sales- When a store has a buy one get one free sale, this is a great time to use your coupons. You can use 2 coupons. One for the item you are buying and one for the item you are getting for free. WHY, you need to remember that a coupon is like cash. The store IS getting paid for that product, by the Manufacturer. So the store gives you the second item for free, but they can turn in the coupon and get paid for that item they just gave you for free. Example- chips are on sale buy one get one free. You pay $4.00 for the first bag of chips, and get the 2nd free. But you have 2 coupons for $1 off a bag of chips. You can use both of those coupons. One coupon is applied to each bag of chips (although one bag is considered free) Both coupons are applied to the total sale price. Bringing the total to $2 for 2 bags of chips. You would have paid $8 for 2 bags of chips, but using the Buy one get one (BOGO) free sale you have saved $4 PLUS $2 in coupons.
Stacking your coupons- Stacking your coupons is when you are able to use 2 coupons for one item. You are able to do this when you use a in-store coupon ( a coupon that the store prints, normally in the weekly ad. It will have the store logo on it) along with a MFR (manufacturer coupon). When you use the in-store coupon and the MFR coupon together this is called “stacking” your coupons. So watch for those in-store coupons, and see if you have a MFR coupon to go along with it.
Rebates- A lot of company’s offer a mail in rebate for their items as part of a promotion to get you to try or buy their product. Many times this makes the item free after rebate. Example- The store is selling nuts for $5.00, and they have a mail in rebate for $5.00 which would make the item free. But if you use a $2.00 coupon on the nuts, after you turn in your rebate they will give you a check for $5.00. SO you will actually make $2.00 for buying the nuts.
Store match or double- Some stores do this every week, but my local stores only do it a few times a year. They will match you coupon amount, which gives you the chance to get twice the amount of your coupon. Example- the store is selling juice for $1.00 but I have a coupon for $.50 off, The store them matches the price of my coupon giving me another $.50 off, making my juice FREE. Normally if a store matches or doubles coupons they only let you do a limited of items per shopping trip. So I plan to make several trip through the checkout line.

Once you starts to collect coupons you will notice very quickly they turn into a huge pile of clutter. The only way I will use coupons is if I can easily find them, and have them organized. Everyone has their own way, I have used several different methods but this is what works for me. I keep them organized on two large file binder
One for food & groceries
One for toiletry or else.
Keep always a empty pocket on front for FREE ITEMS

To keep your binder handly keep it on the car you don't know when you will find a good deal on your way to the store and don't want you to say this:
I have that coupon but is in the house...sounds to me more like a missed deal.

Before the certificate can be used, you do have to purchase a minimum amount at the restaurant. This amount varies depending upon the certificate amount you purchase. If you are planning on going out to dinner or have a special occasion to celebrate, then this is a great way to save yourself lots of money. The best part is once you choose the restaurant certificate you can actually print it right away, so if you wanted to use it today you could!
